General Characteristics :

  • widely distributed in soil and water, especially in fresh and estuarine waters of tropical climates
  • oxidase positive
  • glucose fermenting
  • gram negative bacilli
  • motile by a polar flagella
  • Enterobacteriaceae – the only oxidase positive organism
  • P. shigelloides is the only species
  • resistant to the vibriostatic compound O/129

Clinical Infections :

Lab Characteristics :

  • grow on most media used for routine stool cultures
  • shiny, opaque, nonhemolytic colonies
  • can have a strong odor
  • often overlooked on MAC
  • these are oxidase positive organisms – can use to isolate from Enteriobacteriaceae
  • most are sensitive to vibriostatic agent O/129
