General Characteristics :

  • widely distributed in nature, especially in fresh water, estuarine, and marine environments
  • oxidase positive
  • glucose fermenting
  • gram negative bacilli
  • straight gram negative rods (not curved)
  • motile by means of a single polar flagellum

Clinical Infections :

Lab Characteristics :

  • grow on most media used for routine stool cultures
  • large, round, raised, opaque colonies
  • can have a strong odor
  • most clinically significant species are β-hemolytic
  • often overlooked on MAC
  • these are oxidase positive organisms – can use to isolate from enterobacteriaceae
  • most are indole positive
